🌟 Mr. Wong Choy (Goose) – Progress Update 🌟

It’s hard to believe that Goose has now been with us for several months. Since arriving from Hong Kong through the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Restart Programme, he has enjoyed a well-earned holiday in the fields of West Wales and has now settled into full work, where he is absolutely thriving.

Originally bred in Ireland, Goose enjoyed a successful racing career both in Ireland and Hong Kong before beginning his journey towards life after racing. We are incredibly proud to be one of the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s overseas retraining partners, helping horses like Goose transition into long-term homes and second careers.

To say this horse is a gentleman would be an understatement. He is kind, affectionate, impeccably mannered and genuinely loves being around people. Whether in the stable, out on the yard or under saddle, he is an absolute pleasure to have around.

Goose is currently being hacked out and ridden by a novice 14-year-old rider, whilst continuing his schooling with me. He has proven himself to be a genuine push-button ride who is straightforward, uncomplicated and incredibly willing. Out hacking, he is completely unfazed by large tractors, farm machinery, fast-moving vehicles and all the sights and sounds of everyday rural life. Nothing seems to trouble him, and he takes everything in his stride.

We feel Goose would make a fantastic low-level riding club, hacking or fun ride horse for someone looking for a safe, sensible and enjoyable partner. He is the sort of horse who simply wants to please and enjoy his work.

In the interest of complete transparency, Goose experienced an episode of atrial fibrillation during his final race in Hong Kong. This episode self-corrected and has not reoccurred since. His heart has been monitored and checked regularly throughout his retraining, and there have been no further episodes or concerns identified. Importantly, Goose does not have a heart murmur.

As a result, I would like to see him find a home where he can enjoy a quieter lifestyle and not be asked to undertake strenuous competitive activities such as team chasing, high-level eventing or other intensive athletic pursuits. There is absolutely no reason why this lovely horse cannot go on to enjoy a wonderful second career as a hacking horse, pleasure horse or low-level all-rounder with someone who simply wants a kind and reliable partner to enjoy.

Goose will be available towards the end of the summer, once my partner’s daughter returns to school, although please note that he will not be available to move to his new home until the second week of September.
