The Faces Behind The Work

Each member of the Spiteri Retraining Team brings a wealth of equine knowledge and experience. Most, if not all, have been involved with horses from a very young age, having owned their first ponies as children. They are kind, caring individuals with a great sense of humour, but above all, they share a genuine passion for horses, and it shows in everything they do each day. Nothing is ever too much to ask of them, and they take great pride in their individual roles.

Amberley is the voice of reason on the yard and is always ready for the next adventure. Usually found by Sophie's side, she is truly a jack of all trades and the calm head in even the most stressful situations. From riding and caring for the horses to managing the yard, stepping in whenever Sophie is away, and carrying out viewings and vettings, Amberley does it all. Reliable, capable, and endlessly dedicated, she is an invaluable member of the team and plays a vital role in the smooth running of the yard. We would be truely lost without her.

Affectionately known as the yard's Fairy Godmother, Ali is a truly valued member of the team. She works with the younger horses from the ground, rides the older horses, and helps keep the yard running smoothly by mucking out and ensuring everything is clean, organised, and well cared for. A true one-woman band, Ali is always willing to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. Her cheerful nature, unwavering work ethic, and ever-present smile make her a pleasure to be around, and she is genuinely loved and appreciated by everyone at the yard.

Lou rides and mucks out for us once a week, having previously worked within the racing industry, she has a wealth of experience with Thoroughbreds and sits quietly and confidently on our ex-racehorses. She is never fazed by a horse that is buzzy or fizzy, giving them the confidence and reassurance they need as they begin their retraining journey.

Although she lives a little further away, Lou always goes above and beyond during her time at the yard. Reliable, hardworking, and kind, she is a valued member of the team whose dedication never goes unnoticed.

Carys rides for us two to three times a week and is a fantastic horsewoman with a happy, bubbly personality. Every day is a learning opportunity with Carys, and a hack out with her is never dull, you are guaranteed to come back having learned something new. She rides beautifully, with a secure seat and quiet, sympathetic hands and legs. More often than not, she is the first to arrive at the yard, with horses tacked up and ready for a morning of retraining before she heads off to school. Whether it's schooling, jumping, hacking through the local villages, or enjoying a ride along the beach, Carys approaches every horse and every ride with enthusiasm.

Sian is the face behind the incredible photographs that showcase all of the Spiteri horses. With 35 years of photography experience, she holds both a BA (Hons) and an MA (Hons) in Photography, specialising in capturing the beauty, character, and individuality of horses and dogs.

Sian can often be found working her magic behind the camera, with her loyal companion Georgie by her side, whether it’s for early morning beach shoots, schooling sessions, or capturing those special moments that tell each horse’s story. No request is ever too much, regardless of the time of day, and she always approaches every opportunity with passion and dedication.

Sian is an invaluable member of the team, and without her incredible talent, the true beauty and personality of these amazing horses would not be captured and shared with the world.

Sandra is our ultimate queen of admin. She manages all the sales contracts, ensuring they are completed, signed, and returned before each horse leaves the yard. She also keeps track of the passports, makes sure photographs are readily available, and is responsible for keeping our website up to date with the latest information. In addition, Sandra ensures all RoR registrations are completed before each horse begins its next chapter. Exceptionally organised, efficient, and always one step ahead, Sandra takes care of every detail with enthusiasm and is always happy to help wherever she can.

Connor is the man of many jobs and a true all-rounder within the team. From dog walking and mucking out to house sitting and being the designated driver, there is very little he doesn’t turn his hand to. Kind, caring, and incredibly reliable, Connor has a natural way with all animals and is always willing to help wherever he is needed.

Having been part of the team for many years, Connor’s journey with Spiteri Retraining began as a young boy completing work experience and has grown into him now owning two ex-racehorses of his own. His passion and understanding of horses have developed alongside the team, making him an invaluable part of the yard.

Connor is an absolute credit to Spiteri Retraining. Responsible, dependable, and always ready to step up, he plays an important role whenever the team heads off to shows, collects new horses, or needs an extra pair of capable hands.
